Tour Dossier: Switzerland, Davos
Spring, Summer and Autumn
Davos is available for Go as you Please Holidays from late May until Late October.
Travel on any day you wish and stay as long as you like.
Your Holiday Centre. Davos, Grissons Region
Davos is the highest town in Europe at 5½ thousand feet above sea level. It has long been famous for its pure air and bracing climate.
During winter, Davos is one of the leading resorts in the world, visited by the great and good of all nations! It therefore has a massive infrastructure of cable cars, lifts and mountain railways which in summer are available for walkers to use to reach the high places.
Davos is really two settlements, Davos Dorf and Davos Platz. Davos Dorf is
the older part and is slightly lower than Platz. It has a small lake and a
number of delightful "satellite" hamlets surrounding it. Davos Platz
(where we are based) is more modern with very high class shops and facilities.
Both sections of Davos have their own railway station and the ride between the
two is about 3 minutes. The famous resort of Klosters is just down the hill from
Davos and again there are numerous cable cars for the use of summer walkers
there. The high lev
el paths generally all link up with these facilities….so
you can get high quickly and effortlessly and stay high until time to return to
the valley.
Davos Tourist office produces some excellent walking maps, both OS and synoptic. I prefer the synoptic maps for planning walks because they give you an overall picture of the area. We shall provide one of these with your holiday paper work and tickets etc.
There are some excellent sports facilities which are generally up to Olympic standards. There are also a number of very exclusive clinics where the world’s leading specialists have their practices. So you can get cured!! (But take out a 2nd mortgage.) Shops, banks and numerous restaurants abound.
Although Davos has a reputation for being very expensive and exclusive (and is in winter), that is not the case in summer. We found it to be very reasonable and no different from anywhere else in Switzerland.
Accommodation & Meals
Our Davos hotel is the 4 star Morosani Post Hotel, known locally as the "Pöstli". Accommodation is on a half-board basis (Bed, Breakfast and evening meal). Guests can opt for Bed & Breakfast only if they wish, with a subsequent reduction.
This is a superb hotel and well worth its 4 stars. When they hold the G8 conference in January, several world leaders stay there. Hilary Clinton classes herself as a regular!
The cuisine and service are second to none. The reception area is manned by courteous and professional staff all of who speak excellent English. Both Mr Morosani and his managers Mr & Mrs Gubser are charming and friendly people.
The rooms are large and luxuriously appointed each with separate bathroom, balcony, TV, radio and telephone. Room service is available at the press of a button. One or two nice touches that we found were that they provide bathrobes and slippers for you so you can go straight from your room to their indoor swimming pool and sauna, there is always a bottle of wine and a fruit bowl put out in your room on arrival.
It is a class hotel and one where guests are pampered and looked after. The breakfast buffet is the tops!
Walking from Davos
Davos is at the hub of many many kilometers of well marked and well maintained footpaths. These range from the very gentle to the more ambitious and strenuous.
By far the best way to ascertain the potential of the area for walking is to study one of the synoptic maps of the region mentioned above on which footpaths and route details are listed. We will include this in the information which we send out when we dispatch tickets etc.
The local transport is second to none (as you would expect) and with your Swiss half-fare card you can combine cable cars, funiculars, trains and buses to get the very best out of the area at a very reasonable cost. There is also a Davos runabout ticket available to purchase so many fee days on local transport.
On arrival at the "Pöstli" hotel, you will receive a guest card which can be used to travel on the local bus service absolutely free. The buses and cable cars all link together so that walks can be organized around them.
I would suggest that in a two week period, walkers staying in Davos would find a new and interesting route each day without having to go too far afield and always arriving back at the hotel in plenty of time for dinner.
Non Walking Excursion Possibilities from Davos
The Heidi & Bernina Expresses which run over the Bernina Pass
The ancient and beautiful towns of Chur or Landquart
The neighbouring resort of Klosters
Lichentenstein (Europe’s smallest country)
The Glacier Express which runs over the Furka-Oberalp pass to Brig and Zermatt.
These are just tasters of the many excursion possibilities from Davos and remember they will be inexpensive with your half-fare Swiss card. Again, leaflets and brochures abound on all these. You will find the only difficulty is fitting everything in….so you will probably have to return again and again!
Travel Options from UK
By air to Zürich or Basel:
Direct scheduled services with Swiss London Heathrow, London City, Birmingham, Manchester and Davos.
Flights are also available via Geneva at no extra cost but it’s a long long way!
Transfers by Rail:
Zürich or Basel or Geneva – Landquart – Davos Platz
From Zürich, and Basel, trains are fast and efficient and run every hour. Zürich airport has a direct rail link. Basel airport is linked to the station by a shuttle bus.
The rail journey from Zürich or Basel to Davos goes via Landquart.
From Zürich airport trains to Zürich HB (main station) run every few minutes and from the HB there is a direct inter city service to Landquart every hour.
Basel also has a direct inter city service to Landquart
From Landquart the spectacular narrow gauge Rhättische Bahn climbs 3500 feet in 20 miles to take you on to Davos.
If you use the "fly/rail" baggage system the journey is completely trouble free and your cases will be brought from the airport to Davos Platz station where your hotelier will collect them for you. (Details below).
The rail journey up into the Alps is a spectacular part of your holiday. Swiss railways are a joy to travel on. They are fast, reliable, clean and on time with courteous professional staff.
We will provide you with detailed rail itineraries which include directions, timetables and platform numbers. These will be tailor made for your individual journey.
Swiss Card: (included if you book your Swiss flights with us)
A Swiss Card travel pass is your transfer ticket at the beginning and end of your holiday and entitles you to HALF-FARE travel on all transport whilst you are in Switzerland.
If you book your own flights the Swiss card is not included
but we strongly advise you to purchase them from us so that your rail transfers are taken care of and you have the same advantage of half-fare travel in Switzerland as guests for whom we have assembled the whole package. Simply inform us of your flight timings and we will give you the rail itinerary in the same way as those with the flight included. We do not have any problem with guests arranging their own flights. Many people now obtain "air miles" or go through the internet to Easyjet. By all means do that but again we emphasise the importance of ordering a Swiss card from us.
NB Fly/rail baggage is not available for guests traveling with 'No Frills' airlines.
Self Drive:
If you wish to travel to Davos in your own car, simply consult the accommodation only price column on our price list. Again the purchase a Swiss half-fare card from us which is well worth it for the cable cars and post buses.
The following optional extra items can be ordered with your booking.
Just indicate on your booking form which extras you require:
Fly / Rail Baggage:
£10.00 per item of luggage each way (Not available with Easyjet)Your luggage is checked in at your UK airport and transported directly to Mürren. You give the receipts to your hotelier and your bags are collected and delivered to your room. Your luggage usually arrives on the train after you. On the return journey, you check in your bags at Mürren railway station early on your departure day or the evening before and then travel light. You collect your baggage from the carousel at your UK airport. You can therefore break your journey and have a couple of hours in one of the en-route cities without the hassle of left luggage.
Many of our first time visitors to Switzerland are deeply distrustful of this system, having been brought up on British Rail…..but believe me….it works!
Swiss Family Card: Free of Charge
All children up to the age of 16 travel FREE with an accompanying adult who has a Swiss Card. This family card is FREE and represents amazing savings for families.
