Costa
Blanca |
The Area
This
tour takes you through some of the most stunning scenery on the Costa
Blanca along ancient footpaths, forestry tracks and quiet country roads.
It includes stays in whitewashed mountain villages which date from the
Moorish occupation of Spain. You have some ascents that take in
viewpoints with stunning views, as well as valley walks through
cultivated fields of olives, oranges and other exotic produce. Enjoy the
sights and smells of the many fragrant flowers and herbs that you will
pass. We use accommodation that will blend in with the journey and
heighten the experience.
The
Walking
You
will walk along a selection of old Moorish tracks and footpaths, some
rough and stony and quiet "B" roads. The paths
are not difficult to follow. There are some steep climbs but no
scrambling is involved. We would grade the walk as medium difficulty.
Details of the distances and ascents can be found below.
Self Guided
Available
throughout the year. However, we do not recommend the walk during July
and August due to high summer temperatures. You can walk entirely at
your own pace and we provide extensive walk notes giving distances,
route directions, ascents and descents, toilet stops and many optional
variations to shorten or lengthen the journey. We also provide relevant
maps. If you wish to lengthen the journey we can easily add a rest day
when you make the booking.
The Route
We have a dossier with full details on request.
Day
1:
Transfer from the airport to Callosa de En Sarria explore the old town;
narrow streets and houses built on Moorish foundations with views of the
Mediterranean Sea
Day 2:
3½ to 4
hours that takes you through irrigated terraces of oranges, lemons and
loquats around Callosa and up into the olive, almond and pine groves of
the surrounding hillsides to finish at Benimantell. There are also views
of the sea in the distance as you get higher. 14 km and 635m ascent
Day
3: 4
to 6 hours. Explore some of the highest mountains in the region, the
1558m Sierra Aitana. From these peaks you have an unrivalled view of
the Costa Blanca. 15 km and 750m ascent. There is also a shorter
9 km and 650m route for those who prefer a more leisurely walk
and perhaps a dip in the hotel pool in Benifato before the sun sets. Or
a longer 18km and 850m ascent for the strong walkers.
Day 4:
5½ to 6½
hours. This walk takes you from east to west along the north face of
the Aitana, passing four freshwater springs and three ice houses, large
covered stone pits where winter snow was pressed into ice and stored
until it was transported down in summer. Overnight in Confrides 19 km
and 760m ascent.
Day 5:
6 hours.
This walk takes you out of the Guadalest Valley, over Serrella and into
the parallel Castells de Castells Valley. Your route is that of the
ancient track which connected the two valleys. Overnight in Castells de
Castells 16km and 530m ascent. There is also a 7km and 275m
option for a detour to the site of a castle which was the principal
Moorish stronghold in the area.
Day 6:
5 hours.
Travel through the quietest and most uninhabited part of your route into
the hidden valleys of Garx and Bijauca, Moorish names that have
persisted for more than 1000 years. Along the way you will also visit
the impressive rock arches in the Alicante province. Overnight in the
delightfurl village of Tarbena. 17 km and 520m ascent.
Day 7: 41/2 to 5
hours.
A relaxed day of
mostly downhill walking that takes you through the olive, almond and
pine groves of the Tàrbena Valley and into the semi-tropical Algar where
you can visit the impressive Algar Falls, a series of natural pools and
waterfalls, before finishing your circuit in Callosa where you started.
13 km and 200m ascent.
Day 8:
Transfer to
Alicante airport for your return journey home.
The hotels and food
We have
especially selected accommodation which fits the character of the walk.
They are small, quiet, Spanish family run Pensions, Casa Rurals and
Hotels, whichever we feel has the best quality of service from the
choice available in the village. You will be assured of a friendly
welcome at the end of a day’s walking, and maybe a dip in the pool,
aperitifs on your balcony, or roof top dinner, depending on the
location. Accommodation is full board (breakfast, packed lunch and
supper) so you should have to spend little extra money during your
journey.
Baggage transfer
Your bag will be
transferred daily to your next hotel so that you can enjoy the walking
with just a day pack.
How to get there
Fly to Alicante
airport with frequent scheduled, low cost and charter flights from
throughout the UK & Ireland. Transfer to and from your hotel is
provided.
When to go
Close proximity to the sea means a mild climate ideal for autumn, winter and
spring walking. The temperatures do rise greatly in July and August and
we do not recommend holidays during these months.

transferred by to your first and last hotel in Callosa (1 hour)
