Holiday Accommodation Details

The Great Wall Trek

Photo of the accommodation

We feature Chinese Hotels and Homestays in close proximity to the Great Wall.  Due to their rural location standards may not be as high as city hotels and some features such as bathrooms may be unusual to us. Homestays do not provide towels, soap or toilet paper. A sample of accommodation is as follows with changes as necessary when space is limited.

Night 4  Huangyaguan – Huangya Shanzhuang Hotel – at the base of two sections of the Great Wall, this is a delightful hotel built of grey stone around four courtyards. Guestrooms open onto a courtyard with outside seating. Rooms are simple with private bathroom, TV and air conditioning for heat and cooling. Meals are taken in the large restaurant serving mainly Chinese food with limited Western items for breakfast.

Night 5  Jinshanling – Jinshanling Great Wall Hotel – very similar in style and facilities as the previous evening. This is the hotel with unusual bathrooms!  Dinner may be taken in a nearby family restaurant and a combined Western and Chinese breakfast is served in the huge dining room.

Night 6  Lotus Flower – Here you will stay in a lovely family run Homestay which has bright air conditioned rooms on two levels with small, well-appointed shower rooms and western toilet.  Hot water is provided at key times and their cuisine is delicious – perhaps the best we experience!

Night 7  Mutianyu – Bamboo Brook Homestay. This is a delightful Farmers Homestay in ‘motel style’ as rooms face the car park.  Rooms and bathrooms are simple and bright with comfortable beds and air-conditioning. There is plenty of outside dining and seating, but the most wonderful feature of this hotel is its greenhouse complete with tinkling streams and tropical plants.  Fish slowly swim through the streams; there are swing seats and tables for dining or just taking tea. A few of the uniform clad staff speak odd words of English and we recommend an extra night here if a rest day is desired. Chinese food here is fresh and abundant with local produce.  Extensive outside fish pools provide very fresh fish for the restaurant.
