Papillote Wilderness Retreat and Restaurant

Photo of the accommodation

Papillote is a small comfortable mountain inn at the head of the Roseau River Valley about 30minutes from the capital of Roseau.  Set against a back drop of unimaginable lushness mountains waterfalls, pristine rainforest and tropical gardens surround the barely visible buildings of the hotel.

Described as "The epitome of a mountain retreat" Papillote is a quiet simple place in tune with island life and is set in four acres of world famous tropical gardens full of orchids and bromeliads and home to 30 kinds of birds and 19 species of butterfly. The hotel and gardens have evolved over many years and are the entire creation of the present owners. Hummingbirds skim huge ginger blossoms amidst the hot and cold pools there to soothe at the end of a day's hike.  Seats are scattered through the gardens in quiet, peaceful places where guests can fully appreciate the tranquillity. Rooms blend into the gardens to the extent that they can hardly been seen. They are spacious and colonial in style with antique furniture and beautiful local quilts.  Bathrooms are ensuite, showers use hot thermal waters and mountain breezes filter through the shutters replacing the need for air conditioning. Rooms have electricity but no television or telephone.  Internet access is available for guests to use.

Dining in Papillote's renowned Rainforest Restaurant overlooking the beautiful Roseau River Valley is a delight as butterflies and hummingbirds flit from tree to flower and jungle sounds provide the music.  Fresh fish, tasty Creole dishes warmed by Caribbean spices and an endless array of vegetables from Dominica's organic kitchen garden are all delicious.  The food is wholesome yet elegant.  Breakfast includes home made jams, huge platters of tropical fruits, local honey and even porridge - all washed down with mellow Dominican coffee.

The highlight of Papillote however, has to be the gardens - four acres of tropical trees and flowering plants to include orchids, bromeliads, aroids, jade vines and gingers.  A network of pathways twine their way through the gardens alongside rushing streams of hot thermal waters passing mossy glades with barely distinguishable statues hidden amongst the ferns. Every so often you come across another special feature of Papillote - four mineral hot pools created for a relaxing soak after a day's hiking.  Heaven!
