Corfu trail - Northern Section - Hotel to Hotel Trek Self Guided walking holiday - Click here to find out more about Self Guided walking holidays

The Greek island of Corfu is a walker’s paradise, and what better way to explore it than walking on the Corfu Trail? It is over 200km long in all and is rated as one of the best long-distance walks in the world. With forested hills, spectacular views, azure seas and idyllic beaches, it’s easy to see why walkers keep returning to Corfu!

The Walking

On this trek, you will discover Corfu’s wildest and most breathtaking scenery and its most rugged coastline. Enjoy finding deserted villages and sophisticated coastline dotted with smart villas, with views of Albania across the sea. The north of Corfu is more mountainous than the south, its highest peak being 911 metres, which you can walk to if you wish. Some of the northern routes are not as well-trodden as those in the south and are occasionally a little overgrown; however the underlying paths are of good quality. This stunning walk will take you to the end of the trail at Corfu’s most northerly point.

Walk Grading

Self-guided – Moderate, with some long days. Total for standard week ignoring variations:- Ascent 2550m, Descent 3390m, 65 miles.

Luggage transfer

Your luggage is transported each day from hotel to hotel, enabling you to walk with a day rucksack only. On some days we transfer you to/from the start of a walk and/or collect you at the end. These transfers are included in the holiday cost.

The remainder of the trail

If you wish a slightly easier walk you can undertake the Southern section or you can walk the entire trail

THE ROUTE

Day 1: After your flight, you will be transferred to Pelekas – a pretty western village. For a late flight arrival, you may wish to stay in Corfu Town (Kerkyra) for your first night and transfer to Pelekas in the morning to start the trek. Overnight in Corfu Town is B&B only.

Day 2: Pelekas to Liapades. Begin with amazing west-coast views as you undulate northwards. You will pass ancient villages clinging to the hillsides, such as Giannades. Then continue through shady olive groves as you walk to the ancient hillside village of Liapades. Overnight in Liapades.
Ascent 500m, Descent 700m, Distance 14 ¼ miles, Time 7 hours.

Day 3: Liapades to Agios Georgios. A climb to start the day with splendid views as you look back to the beautiful bay of Liapades. Pass through Krini, a cliff-top village, before descending on an ancient kalderimi to the sea, while relishing one of the best views of the week. Once at sea level, walk along the coast through olive groves to the small resort of Agios Georgios and your hotel.
Ascent 380m, Descent 380m, Distance 8 ½ miles, Time 4 hours.

Day 4: Agios Georgios to Roda (part transfer). A steep climb takes you to the colourful village of Prinilas. Then descend to picturesque Pagi before continuing through open countryside to the Mesapotamos River and onwards to Agros. Passing a beautiful monastery, the trail intersects the main road at Rekini and offers a chance to relax with refreshments at a kafeneion near the bridge before being transferred to your accommodation for the night at Roda.
Ascent 320m, Descent 620m, Distance 9 miles, Time 4 hours.

Day 5: After breakfast, we transfer you back to the trail. Today’s trek is a woodland wonder! A fairly steep ascent through the ‘Valanio Network of Trails’ leads you to the isolated village of Valanio. Follow old mule paths and forest tracks to reach the quaint village of Sokraki. Further woodland tracks lead you to your accommodation in the agricultural valley at Spartillas. (As space is limited here, the night may be on the coast in nearby Barbati, 45 minutes further on.)
Ascent 400m, Descent 270m, Distance 7 ½ miles, Time 4 hours.

Day 6: The culmination of the trek is today’s ascent to Corfu’s highest peak, Mount Pantokrator at 911 metres. After 10 minutes transfer to walk start point, savour a fantastic look-out point at the ruined Taxiarchis Chapel with fresco-covered walls. Continue to the Karst Plateau and simply breathtaking scenery. A slight deviation will take you to the summit. Then descend on a mule track with wonderful views to the north and the south. In the valley ahead lays the semi-ruined Byzantine village of Perithea and a welcome break for refreshments. On through shady woodland to reach the sea at Almiros. Then follow the coastal footpath at Aghios Spyridon, passing the beacon that signals the northernmost point of the island at Cape Aghia Ekaterini. There will be a 20-minute transfer to your hotel.
Ascent 390m, Descent 860m, Distance 14 ½ miles, Time 7 hours.

Day 7: This circular route (a small section of the Corfu Trail, climbs the north-east flank of the island. A steep climb takes you to the village of Porta and on to the semi-ruined Mangoulas. Enjoy the spectacular panoramic views here. The descent initially takes you through fairly overgrown, rugged terrain but brings you quickly to the village of Katovotos. Then return to Kalami along a delightful coastal path with several swimming spots en-route.
Ascent 560m, Descent 560m, Distance 10 ¼ miles, Time 5 hours.

Day 8: You are transferred back to the airport for your flight home. For late flight departures, we offer the opportunity to explore the historic old town of Kerkyra (Corfu Town) prior to your airport transfer.

This trek is only available in late April, May and June, and September to October. The hotels are not available in the winter months and are not available to us during July and August. Fortunately, the available months are the very best for this trek! Late June and early September can be quite hot for walking, and the end of October will be cooler in the mountains.

The holiday cost includes transfers from Corfu Airport – there is only one transfer on the island, to the first hotel and from the last. Corfu has flights from all the main airports in the UK with a choice of charter and low-cost airlines. With very late flight arrivals, we recommend that the first night is taken in Corfu Town. This does not affect your walking programme for the following day.
