Walking Holidays in Switzerland - Aeschi
Aeschi a small village in the Bernese Oberland is located close to Spiez on the southern shores of Lake Thun one of the two stunning lakes (the other being Brienz) that lie either side of Interlaken.
Lake Thun is well sheltered from both north and east winds and has an unusually mild climate. Pleasure steamer services commence as early as April and the gardens of the charming lake side villages abound with southern plants including laurel and fig trees.
Spiez a popular health and sailing resort has many facilities with attractive shops restaurants and museums as well as a Romanesque castle and a lakeside lido. Located on a fast rail route it gives easy access to the capital Berne Interlaken and other historical towns and villages. Importantly Spiez is also a junction for the railway into the picturesque Kandertal Valley bringing the additional walking areas of Adelboden Kandersteg and the Rhone Valley within easy reach.
The Centre
Aeschi itself is a charming village situated on a sun terrace above Spiez overlooking the blue waters of the lake. The views across the lake and surrounding mountains are simply stunning.
The village has a heated swimming pool and small village shops where you can buy your picnic. There is a frequent bus service through the village and Spiez is just 15 minutes away.
The surrounding area is of gentle rolling farmland and allows walking from the steps of the hotel. You can visit the local nature reserve Suld valley with its wonderful flora and fauna and the spectacular Pochtenfall (waterfall).
Nearby is the funicular to the top of the pyramidal Mount Niesen(2300m) with its spectacular views of the ‘giants’ of the Bernese Oberland.
The Walking
There are over 125 miles of well marked paths radiating out from Aeschi as well as clearly marked trails on both sides of the lake and into the mountains above Kandertal and the Niederhorn area on the opposite shore.
The immediate walking is of a gentle nature and is ideal for those seeking convenient walks that are not too challenging.
All the walks have spectacular views of Lake Thun or the high mountains of the Bernese Oberland.
There are more challenging walks a short distance away and all the well known routes of the Bernese Oberland are within easy reach by rail from Spiez.
Our exclusive walk booklet has details of both the local easier walks and the more challenging routes. It includes some of the nearby ‘classics’ of the Bernese Oberland.

stations receive your boarding pass. Your bag will then be transferred to your flight and you collect it from the baggage carousel on arrival.
