Walking Holidays in Switzerland - Engelberg
Engelberg is situated at the head of a picturesque valley leading up to the mountains from Lake Luzern. The
short railway journey from Luzern provides an excellent prelude to the scenery that awaits you.
Paths (most accessible by cable car) radiate in all directions offering walkers a choice of stunning routes along with the distraction of some excellent mountain restaurants where it would be impossible not to linger!
The village is at 1050m and is full of fresh invigorating mountain air. The most famous cableway is the rotating ‘Rotair’ taking its passengers up to Mount Titlis an area of year round skiing and snow activities and the highest viewpoint in Central Switzerland at 3239m (over 10000 feet).
Aside from the contrasting scenery of meadows snow rocky mountain peaks and deep blue lakes there are also numerous activities for children making it an ideal and encouraging area for parents with young walkers.
The Centre
Engelberg’s famous Benedictine Monastery radiates a special charm over the entire village creating a very Swiss atmosphere. Beyond the surrounding meadows impressive mountains rise steeply from the valley floor.
This is the last major village in the valley leaving its peace and tranquillity undisturbed by passing traffic. On one side a four stage gondola rises up to the snowy world of Mt Titlis passing the picturesque lake of Traubsee. On the other a cable car skims over forests and meadows to the superb walking area at Brunni. In the evening relax in one of the many pavement cafes located in the traffic free centre.
The Walking
There are 225 miles of hiking paths in the area and our exclusive walk booklet captures the best of them for you to enjoy.
From the village there are many easy walks with special routes for geological and floral interest a short distance away. More challenging is the four lakes walk or the Wallen Trail a lovely high ridge walk with surprising discoveries in the world of fauna flora and geology.
Walk to Furenalp at 1868m slightly hidden but all the more tranquil with its lush alpine meadows and impressive views toward Spannort and Engelberg. On this walk you encounter the impressive Stauber waterfall. Climb to the Joch Pass either assisted by cable car and chair lift or on foot and explore this high lakeland area and maybe press on to
Haslital along the Paradise way and return by train.
