Walking Holidays in Switzerland - Murren
Mürren is perhaps the most beautiful village in the Bernese Oberland perched, high up above the Lauterbrunnen Valley at 1645m above sea level. From the Mürren side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley the view of the famous Eiger Mönch and Jungfrau is simply the best.
The surrounding area is a pleasure to walk in with some of the most famous walking in the world within easy reach. Above Mürren rises the great peak of the Schilthorn at 3018m feet with its revolving restaurant made famous by James Bond and accessed by a spectacular cable car.
Interlaken and its famous lakes are easily reached for a lowland excursion or at the opposite extreme you can use the railway to the highest station in Europe the Jungfraujoch at 3455m. - a ‘must do’ trip.
The Centre
Mürren offers all the facilities of a modern resort built in harmony with its surroundings. In summer it is very peaceful and, apart from the occasional electric vehicle is traffic free.
Cars have to be left at Lauterbrunnen and the only access to Mürren is by cable car from either Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg at the head of the Lauterbrunnental Valley.
Mürren has a modern sports centre with an indoor swimming pool with reduced price entry for guests.
The Walking
In summer there are over 125 miles of well marked paths which give a splendid opportunity to discover the area. You can walk up to glaciers follow mountain streams and walk through flower bedecked pastures. The routes vary from gentle strolls to full day hikes at high altitude.
Favourites from the village include the North Face and Mountain View Trails both offering magnificent views of the Bernese Alps which compel you to stand and stare.
Enjoy easy walking through the alpine meadows of the Blummental ‘the flower valley’ with its host of wild flowers and butterflies. The more adventurous can walk to the towering Schilthorn summit (just under 3050m) and return by way of the Rotstock Hut. Nearby is the famous walk from the alpine garden at Schynige Platte to the summit of the Faulhorn and on to First one of the great Swiss classics.
The area is well served by the mountain railways so you can easily reach a multitude of starting points for your walks. This gives you the opportunity to walk beneath the great north face of the mighty Eiger or follow ridge walks with commanding ever-changing views.

Murren’s altitude means that it is at its best from mid June onwards especially for flower enthusiasts. Most paths will remain open until mid October when early snows may restrict the number of routes available.
