Val di Fassa - Trek - Hotel to Hotel Trek Self Guided walking holiday - Click here to find out more about Self Guided walking holidays

The Area

Val di Fassa is located in northern Italy amongst the mighty rocks forming the traditional picture of the Dolomites. However, the valley has much to offer as you journey from the valley floor to the high mountain passes you will be going through pine forests and broad grasslands adding colour and texture to the landscape. On the valley floor you stay in hotels of a traditional Alpine style. Your nights in the mountains are at two of the many rifugios which are located on the mountain sides.

The Walking

The walking is on well-defined paths with some gravel tracks. There are some steep sections, up and down, as well as vertiginous sections requiring a head for heights. The majority of the walking is at over 2000m apart from ascents and descents from the valley, with the highest pass being at 2770m.

Luggage Transfer

Your luggage is transported from hotel to hotel apart from the two nights in rifugios. For these two nights it will be necessary for you to carry spare clothes and washing kit as your luggage cannot be transported to these remote accommodations. For the other nights you will only require a day pack.

Walk Grading

Self-Guided - Challenging. Most days have long ascents or descents although on occasions these may be avoided by using some of the many cable cars and chairlifts in the area. Due to the type of walking offered by the Dolomites the paths often have vertiginous sections.

Day 1 Fly to Verona before taking public transport to Passo di Costalunga.

Day 2 Head straight uphill to rise above the tree line from where you are immediately rewarded with fantastic views of the Latemar range. A fairly level walk continues close to the rocky spires of Cigolade along the “sheep path”. As you descend towards the tree line you are greeted by alpine paths. Your walk is completed by returning to the valley floor. Take a chairlift at the start of the walk and a cable car at the end to avoid the ascent and descent. 8 ½ miles 5 hours Ascent 665m Descent 1075m Overnight Vigo di Fassa.

Day 3 After a short river walk, take a cable car for the first 700m of climbing with a choice of walking up the final section to Col Valvacin or taking a chairlift. From this grassy peak follow a ridge with lofty views down to the valley below. Continuing on a small path hugging the mountain side you reach the high point of the day at 2419m before slowly descending into the valley below by following the river with its ever narrowing valley walks.13 ½ miles 7 hours Ascent 720m Descent 1295m If taking the chairlift deduct 1 mile ¾ hour Ascent 300m. Overnight Alba.

Day 4 A long but gradual ascent starts the day to Lake Fedaia passing many shrines and a chapel dedicated to the crucifixion of Jesus. From the lake you rise sharply to the “bread path” which gives fantastic views of the Marmolada glacier, peaks and to the valley below. Either descend by two cable cars to the valley floor or, walk on to take a cable car up to the “terrace of the Dolomites”. Return on the cable car before a descent brings you to your final cable car descent to the valley. 11 ½ miles 6 hours Ascent 1055m Descent 625m Overnight Alba.

Day 5
Today a river walk (part way can be by bus) then a cable car whisks you back to the high mountains. Your first path goes through the “City of Stone”, a section where time has left stones standing on the hilltop. Continue around high rocky Dolomite peaks to your accommodation for the night at 2300m. 10 ¾ miles 5 hours Ascent 510m Descent 615m Overnight Rifugio Sasso Piatto.

Day 6 A level ridge walk starts the day before descending to river level. This marks the start of your climb to the highest point on the trek, initially through woodland then on to rockier terrain. Pass a refugio with an attractive adjacent lake before reaching a scene more reminiscent of a moonscape. You then cross the pass at 2770m, with a steep final approach and initial descent. 9 ½ miles 7 hours Ascent 960m Descent 1045m Overnight Rifugio Vajolet.

Day 7 After a short descent you take a path up and over the Cigolade Pass (2553m) which twists and turns before descending to grassland and on to Vigo di Fassa. Alternatively take a shorter route along a track, passing many refugios before walking down to Vigo di Fassa. 7 ½ miles 5 hours Ascent 450m Descent 1300m or 5 ½ miles 2 ¾ hours Ascent 50m Descent 940m Overnight Vigo di Fassa.

Day 8 Take the public transport back to Verona for your flight home.
