With easy access and a superb climate, the
Alpujarras traverse the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada which rise
to over 3300m and offer excellent and varied walking opportunities.
Often with snow capped peaks until late June, the Sierra Nevada provides
a stunning backdrop to the lower slopes of the Alpujarra range. Here,
narrow roads wind their way around the folds in the mountains
connecting whitewashed villages clinging to the hillside or perched over
a ravine. Few cars however, pass this way.
The villages were designed for four legged
transport as opposed to four wheeled. Views are far reaching along the
Alpujarras, down to the deep valley below and across to the remote
Sierra de la Contraviesa. Granada, with its famous Alhambra Palace- a
reminder of the Moorish influence on
the region could provide a cultural extension to your walking holiday.

Our excellent choice of walking routes often follow
ancient
paths linking villages of the Alpujarras with the opportunity
to explore their narrow streets or to linger over a cooling
drink in a shady café before continuing on your way.
Ancient olive terraces, flower lined paths, deep ravines and
trails up into the Sierra Nevada extend the walking
possibilities for something a little more strenuous. We
have two bases from which to explore the Alpujarras each
with their own exclusive set of walking notes. From Casa
las Chimineas our walks largely start and finish in the
village. Most of those that do not, David the owner will be
happy to take you to the start and collect you at the finish
of the local walk free of charge, others a little further afield
will incur a local small charge. From Finca Los llanos, again a large
number can be walked from the village, There is a local bus but the
times are not walker friendly so we have designed the walks to be
suitable for a car which is included in the price.
We have
chosen accommodation in two villages in Andalucia.
Casa las Chimineas
is delightfully
restored whitewashed village house located in a small village in the eastern
Alpujarras benefiting from far reaching views in all directions.
The
Finca Los
llanos
is a 3 star hotel is situated in the small
picturesque village of Capiliera. It is family run and has been built to be
totally in keeping with its setting and has commanding views over the valley.
March to June is superb for wild flowers, clear skies and a vista of snow
capped mountains an ideal time for keen photographers. FromSeptember to
November the harsh summer light starts to mellow as the landscape turns
golden yellow and mornings become soft and dewy. July and August we feel
the summer heat is too intense to make walking a pleasure.
Of the local airports Malaga has the most flights to
the UK, followed by Almeria and closely
followed by Granada. Closest to Bubion is Granada (1½
hours), further afield is Almeria ( 2½
hours) and Malaga (2¾
hours away). Closest to Chimenas is Almeria (1¾
hours) Granada (2 hours) and Malaga (3¼
hours). For Las Chimenas transfers to Almeria or Granada is included,
other airports at a supplement. For Finca Los llanos 8 days car hire is
included.
