The Goms Valley commences at the source of the Rhone just below the Rhone
Glacier and extends all the way to Brig. It is a German speaking area in the
predominately French speaking Canton of Valais. Its resident river is the Rhone
which cascades down under beautiful wooden bridges on its way to France and the
Mediterranean. The valley has small villages strung along its entire length each
with their own character, many on the valley side some on the valley floor, all
waiting to be explored by the walker. A section of the Glacier express rail
route runs through the valley giving easy access to the many walking areas,
others can be reached by transferring to the network of postal busses. Many
waterfalls tumble from the high hanging valleys adding to the spectacular
scenery.
****Hotel
Castle
The hotel is pleasantly situated in its own grounds on the sunny southern
side of the beautiful Goms valley. Peter and his wife Brigitta Gschwendtner have
owned and run this hotel for over 14 years and are renowned for their welcoming
hospitality.
The hotel and the walking is mostly on the south facing side of the
valley so you
capture the full benefits of the sun which raises the temperature above
the average for this area of Switzerland, and lengthens the walking
season. Walking is possible here from late April to October with a
chance of snow in the early and latter parts of this period restricting
you to lower walks.
The walker has a range of truly delightful walks in this area. Explore the
valley either along the young Rhone River or walk through the many traditional
villages each with historic houses bedecked with flowers and interesting
churches, all
with their own individual character. Walk high on the valley side on a
spectacular ‘balcony’ walk, with views over the valley below and snow capped
mountains. Explore hidden side valleys with deep ravines and fast flowing
rivers. Walk from valley to valley on high mountain path passes. Take a walk to
the Grimsel pass, a historic mountain route over the alps with stunning views of
the beautiful Rhone Glacier. Explore some of the highest walking we offer in
Switzerland to the side of the Aletsch Glacier the longest in Europe. Take an
exceptional opportunity to walk on the glacier, (this must only be undertaken
with a guide), which we can arrange
before you go.
Blitzingen
is a small traditional village located on the sunny side of the Goms
Valley. It has its own railway station linking you swiftly to all other
parts of the valley and beyond to where you may start walking.
