The Peloponnese is linked to the Greek mainland by
that magnificent engineering feat, the Corinth Canal,
and
consists of three spindly fingers, the middle of which is known as the
Mani peninsular. The Peloponnese covers an area of land roughly the size
of Wales. Our walking takes place in the Exo Mani (Outer Mani) and is
centred around the bohemian coastal village of Kardamili some 35kms
south of Kalamata. This is a region little affected by tourism and still
heavily reliant on agriculture for its main source of income. The Mani
is a green and lush area
due to its heavy rains in January and February. The
area has small mountain villages each with their own character, all with
Greek Orthodox churches and chapels generally open for you to explore.
They are especially noted for their exquisite frescos on the walls and
ceilings. There are picturesque small fishing villages all along the
coast with whitewashed houses clustered around harbours full of fishing
boats. The scenery is stunning in an area of outstanding natural beauty
steeped in ancient history with fascinating relics of a bygone era.

Most of the walking is on good well-marked
footpaths, often following the kaldaremi (ancient cobbled mule tracks).
You will walk in the foothills of the towering Taygetos Mountains
(rising to 1000 metres) passing through small mountain villages or along
coastal paths.
We offer 4 guided walks a week. Each walk (rated
easy to moderate) is around 12.5kms and last 6 hours including stops.
All local transport is included. Your guide will either be Peter who has
had a house in the area for 14 years and has written a book on local
walking, or one of his Greek protégés who will speak excellent English.

Guided—Independent Holidays |
Our guided-independent holidays
are designed so that you choose the hotel you wish and any travel dates
during April to June and September to November, but still
enjoy a guided holiday. You may be accompanied on these walks
by people who have not booked through New Experience.
The walk s range from
a gentle amble of 6 kms right through
to a more demanding day hike of 20 kms. The average route is around 12.5
kms, 5 hours walking but allow 6-7 hours to finely appreciate the
Byzantine architecture all around. Ascents/descents vary but are mostly
up to 400 - 600 metres. Walks start from Kardamili, or you use the
excellent local bus service to get to the start or finish of some of the
trailheads. We provide you with local walking maps, bus times and our
detailed selfguided walk booklet of walks catering for all abilities.
We looked at a number of towns and
plumbed for Kardamili as the ideal base. We have chosen two hotels in Kardamili
that offer good value family accommodation. One is bed and breakfast only, the
Vardia Aparthotel click for more details and also The
Gorgones Hotel which is available half board.
The walking season is generally best during April to June and September to
November. During April the spring flowers are prolific with the area
particularly renowned for its many varieties of orchids. Quite often
there are still vestiges of snow on the tops of the mountains until
early May. July and August are too hot for walking and then the second
spring starts again in September.
