Walking in LA Palma
|
|
Canary Islands, Spain |
La
Palma, a lush, mountainous island in the Western Canaries offers
attractive opportunities for walkers, nature lovers and those wishing to
explore picturesque small towns and villages dotted along the coast and
inland. Not a large island, measuring the equivalent of just 24 miles
square, farming remains the bedrock of its economy.
It has a diversity of landscapes constantly
changing as you gain height or vary direction. There are forests of pine
laurel and eucalyptus; almond groves, tobacco fields and banana
plantations; vineyards; tall, slim pines and meadows strewn with
colourful wild flowers. In contrast, the island also features extensive
evidence of both recent (only 30 years ago) and historic volcanic
activity with much to explore on foot including the enormous crater of
the Caldera de Taburiente in the awe-inspiring and scientifically
important National Park. The densely forested northern coast features
magnificently rugged sea cliffs and spectacular gorges.
La
Palma offers outstanding walking for the novice and experienced walker
alike using a network of way-marked footpaths. Classics include the
volcano route with a succession of mostly historic volcanos; and a fine
walk circling the Caldera de Taburiente often on its very rim. There are
a host of other, interesting routes including a walk from Las Tricias
through idyllic scenes in the north west with a blend of exotic farms
next to the thousand year old dragon trees; a hike along the canal to
the Marcos y Cordero springs involving use of tunnels and a spectacular
walk on the ‘roof of the island’ from Pico de la Cruz (2351m) to the
highest point on La Palma, Roque de las Machachos (2426m)
On
our guided walks you will be led by someone who believes in the New
Experience philosophy that walking is to be enjoyed not endured. During a
7 night holiday there will be four guided walks. Stay two weeks and
there will be four additional walks. A minibus, included in the price,
will take you to the beginning of each walk and pick you up at the end,
mostly avoiding out and back walks.
