Walking in Marina Alta |
|
Costa
Blanca, Spain |
Our
walking holidays are based in the delightful village of Orba in the region of
south east Spain known as Marina Alta. You can discover the splendour
of a popular walking area, the mountains and valleys of which afford a
multitude of ever changing panoramic views. Agriculture flourishes here
in this fertile region renowned for producing olives, almonds, oranges,
lemons and grapes. Grapes are produced for both wine and raisins and
many crops are cultivated in much the same way as they have been for
four or five centuries. You will marvel at the thousands of terraces
built to gain maximum production from this mountainous region.
Walk through
groves of olive, orange and almond, sensing the total stillness and
silence broken only by the sound of bees collecting pollen from rosemary
and heather and a vast variety of other herbs and plants which grow
profusely.
Savour the peace
and tranquility of walking on pine scented forest tracks, often leading
to high ridge walks; traverse peaks and valleys, using ancient mule
tracks and mozarabic pathways skillfully engineered centuries ago by the
Moors.
Listen to the sound of choughs flying high in the air by the rock faces
and crevices; walk by the salt water marshes where, heron, egret, and
marsh harriers are found.
See ancient ice pits, walled caves, Neolithic cave paintings and the
remains of Moorish castles high in the mountains.
Your
guides, Richard and Ann has been associated with the area for over 15
years and they have lived there permanently for 5 years. Not
surprisingly, they have gained an extensive knowledge of an area that
they love passionately.
All the walks are on a mixture of forest and farm tracks and paths, with
some scrambling for those who take the more difficult routes.
Richard leads walks, often accompanied by his wife Anne, of between 12
to 18 km in length and lasting from 4 to 7 hours. The week’s walking can
be planned to include or leave out ridge walking, precipitous paths,
flat walks or high walks
