Walking in Marina BAja |
|
Costa
Blanca, Spain |
Our
holidays are based in the village of Tàrbena lying at 1860 feet above
sea level. It has a rich history and abundant local wildlife, and also
enjoys splendid views of the Mediterranean some 15 miles away. The
village has a population of just 693 with a local economy based on
agriculture. It is a traditional Valencian village and you will be more
likely to hear Valenciano spoken than Spanish. The rugged terrain
ensures that wherever you go there are panoramic views of mountains,
cultivated terraces and the distant sea. Along with the peace and
tranquillity it makes Tàrbena the ideal location for a memorable walking
holiday.
There is no n eed
to go far from the village to enjoy an amazing array of walks each with
its own characteristics. You may be walking through cherry orchards and
olive fields, through river gorges, ‘barrancos’, or along ridges with
far reaching views. Explore ancient Iberian settlements and Moorish
ruins and enjoy spotting local plants, insects, and birds. They all
combine to make unforgettable walks. A feature of this destination is
that there are few car journeys to get to a walk and if required they
are less than 30 minutes in length. The walks are of easy to medium
difficulty with maximum climbs of 500m and walks generally of 4 – 6
hours.
Erik
your guide, originally from the UK, has been living in Tarbena for over
10 years. He is very settled there, with his partner Esperanza (who was
born in the village) and daughter Carla. When not guiding he farms his
land around the village where he produces cherries, almonds and carob
beans. Erik graduated a number of years ago in Environmental Sciences
and he applies this knowledge together with his farming experience in
making the area come alive as he guides you through the local valleys
and mountains. Erik will know most of the people he passes and will
exchange pleasantries in Valenciano which he speaks fluently as well as
Castillian Spanish. He also is very knowledgeable about all the local
wildlife, plants and history. He has been guiding people for many years
and is always willing and able to tailor the walks to suit the walker’s
interests.

Guided—Independent Holidays |
Five days guided walking
is included and is available year round except July and August. Advice
is given on the many local places to visit on your non-walking day or
you can take a self guided walk, notes provided. The day may well end in
a late lunch (by UK standards not by Spanish) taken in a local
restaurant or even a paella amongst olive trees c ooked
by Esperanza.
Available on selected dates, click here for Dates. You may of course, choose your own departure airport.
We will send you our
exclusive walking booklet for the area with a choice of walks of a
moderate or easy nature. Most of the walks will start and finish in the
village and will be of a very different nature every day. Erik will
arrange car transfers for those walks that require it, and will be on
hand to offer local advice.
Your
holiday will be based at the 2* Hotel Tarbena. This small hotel run by Paco
Oberta and his wife, is right in the centre of the village next to the village
square. It is the fully restored house of a farm labourer. The hotel
encapsulates the peace and tranquillity that exists in the village. Each of its
11 rooms has its own style and personality. All are ensuite with a bath, except
the single rooms that have a shower. A full breakfast is offered every morning.
The half board element is taken in a local restaurant either as a ‘Spanish
lunch’ at about 2.00 pm at the end of the day’s walking or as dinner in the
evening: the choice is yours.
Close proximity to the sea means a mild climate ideal for autumn, winter and
spring walking. The temperatures do rise greatly in July and August and
we do not recommend holidays during these months.
There are frequent flights to Alicante airport with scheduled, low cost
and charter airlines from throughout the UK & Ireland. Transfer to and
from your hotel is provided.
