Switzerland's best kept
secret - Meiringen. This small market town in the Hasli valley has every
facility and yet it remains unspoiled and very Swiss. The local people are welcoming,
kind and hospitable, Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle loved Meiringen and chose it for
the location of Sherlock Holmes's final conflict at the local Reichenbach
Falls.
It is the perfect centre for walks and excursions both in summer and winter
being situated at the convergence of three of Switzerland's major passes,
Grimsel, Susten and Brunig.
A superb integrated network
of Cable Cars, Post Buses and Trains take you in all directions reaching
spectacular locations quickly and easily. You can visit practically anywhere
in Switzerland on a day trip from Meiringen.
Walks from Meiringen encompass
all grades, from gentle strolls to high ridges and even glacier exploring.
In spring you can follow the melting snows into meadows of glorious Alpine
flowers. In summer the high ridges and rugged glacial scenery become accessible.
In autumn the landscape is painted with a riot of colour as the first frosts
come and in winter it is transformed into the proverbial 'winter wonderland'.
The potential for walking
seems limitless, we are still finding wonderful new walks even after 25 years
experience of the region!

Guided Walking.... throughout the year |
Click for dates and detailed
dossiers winter and summer.
During each week of our guided programmes there will be 4 full day guided
walks. They will be 8 - 11 miles long at a relaxed leisurely pace with plenty
of stops en-route to enjoy the magnificent scenery. We normally start between
9 and 10am and finish between 4 and 5pm. We will use cable cars and post
buses to avoid long uphill sections. On most walks there are plenty of 'get
out' points for those who wish to do shorter versions.
Alpine Winter Walking is a special feature of Meiringen and was pioneered
by Lawrence Smallwood some 20 years ago to give visitors an alternative t o
Winter Sports. Many paths are kept clear for us and one can experience all
the glory of the snow landscape well away from the skis and crowds.
On arrival, you will receive our guided walking itinerary covering the whole
of your holiday period so that if you are staying longer than a week, you
can perhaps join 6 or 7 walks if you so wished.

A White Christmas and New Year |
These very popular holidays include our normal winter programme plus Christmas celebrations. Locals observe an ancient custom day and night
from 27th - 30th Dec. of purging evil spirits accumulated through the old
year in the valley!
The farmers dress in colourful, grotesque costumes and masks and ring ceremonial
cow bells and beat drums in procession through the streets of Meiringen....
some guests love it, but if you are a light sleeper you may prefer to avoid
that period, by leaving by the 27th (Early booking is important for the festive season.)
