Mürren is perhaps the most beautiful village in the Bernese Oberland perched high up above the Lauterbrunnen valley at 5400 feet above sea level.
From the Mürren side of the Lauterbrunnen the view of the famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau is simply the best. Above Mürren rises the great peak of the Schilthorn at 9600 feet.
This is accessibile by the spectacular cable car from the village. At its summit is the superb revolving restaurant with its magnificent 360 degree panorama. This was James Bond’s “Piz Gloria” in the film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”. Nearer to the village is the fabulous view point of Allmendhubel which is reached by a funicular railway.
Mürren offers all the facilities of a modern resort built in harmony with its surroundings. There are 14 restaurants in the village, several of which specialise in local dishes. There are also a number of cosy “Stübli” bars and
cafès, some with terraces, where you can enjoy a meal or a drink with the most fantrastic Alpine backdrop. Mürren also has a good variety of quality shops, banking and postal facilities.
In summer it is very peaceful and apart from the odd electric vehicles is traffic free. Cars have to be left at Lauterbrunnen and the only access to Mürren is by funicular railway from Lauterbrunnen or Cable Car from Stechelberg at the head of the valley.
Mürren has a super modern sports centre with an indoor swimming pool, squash and Tennis courts, sauna, solarium and gymnasium. In the same building is a large tourist information office where the staff are all helpful, friendly and fluent in English.
In summer there are over 200km of well marked paths, which give a splendid opportunity to discover the area. The routes vary from gentle strolls to full day hikes at high altitude.
The Jungfrau region is easily accessible from Mürren with a train every 15 minutes to Lauterbrunnen. From there, trains run with clockwork precision to Wengen, Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfraujoch (11,333ft) or down the Lutschinne valley to Interlaken, Wilderswil or Grindelwald. With your Swiss half-fare pass, all these excursions are available to you at a very reasonable price.
The transfer journey from Zürich Airport takes about 3½hrs. Comfortable, reliable and punctual Inter City trains run directly to Interlaken where the Bernese Oberland narrow gauge connect to take you up to Mürren via Lauterbrunnen. The journey in itself is a wonderful experience and very much a part of your holiday.
Fly / Rail baggage facilities are available to and from Mürren and the airport so you can travel light and savour the journey to the full.
