Walking in Tenerife
|
|
Canary Islands, Spain |
Walking in Tenerife is walking in an island of contrasts, from the volcanic moonscapes of the Teide
National Park to the high cliffs , ridges and deep valleys
of the coastal
mountain ranges. The island boasts the highest mountain in Canary Islands, Spain, Teide, at over
12,000 feet. Due to its southern location its slopes can be walked for most of
the year. The coastal ranges of Anaga and Teno rise abruptly from the sea.
Teno hosts the giant and dramatic sea cliffs of Los Gigantes (2000 feet). Anaga
has steep mountain ridges offering magnificent views across the ever present
Atlantic Ocean. Mid way between the two is the Orotavo Valley with its pine clad
slopes. All of this is well away from the crowded tourist resorts for which
Tenerife is better known.
Outstanding walks are available in each of
the main areas. Explore the arid landscapes of wind sculpted lava
pinnacles on Mount Teide. Visit the Oratavo
Valley where you have a choice of
mountains or forests, coastal ridges, or even banana plantations and and
orchards. Discover the Masca Gorge accessed by a boat trip past the Los
Gigantes cliffs, perhaps the most spectacular walk in the Teno Rural Park. Enjoy
walking through the mountain villages of Anaga along winding paths with stunning
sea views, perhaps catching a glimpse of Gran Canaria. Our chosen walks
vary in length and degree of difficulty avoiding long ascents where possible.
They range from 50 - 650m (most around 300m) and on average are 4
hours long.
On our guided wa lks you will be
led by an English couple who have been leading walks in Tenerife for 9
years and believe in the New Experience philosophy that walking is to be
enjoyed not endured. During a 7 night holiday there will be four guided
walks. Stay two weeks and there will be four additional walks. They
range from 200 – 2000 ft in ascent (mostly around 900 ft) and on
average are 4 hours long. A minibus, included in the price, will take
you to the beginning of each walk and pick you up at the end, mostly
avoiding out and back walks. Our chosen walks vary in length and degree
of difficulty avoiding long ascents where possible.

Guided—Independent Holidays |
Our guided-independent
holidays are designed so that you choose the hotel you wish
and any travel dates between November to mid April, but still
enjoy a guided holiday. You may be accompanied on these walks
by people who have not booked through New Experience.
If you wish to stay in the same hotel as other
New Experience walkers we have selected certain dates for group departures based
at the Hotel Valle Mar. Dates below. You may of course, choose your own departure airport.
Available y ear round. We provide a
booklet with all grades of walks in Tenerife. Each has
been chosen by one of
our own people and each has been walked in the last 12 months.
We give full
directional notes as well as details of public transport or car accessibility.
We also give a grading, average walking time, and extent of ascents and
descents. We also point out things of interest along the way. This is
supported by a list of other walks which we have not yet been able to document
but soon will.
We looked at hotels throughout the
walking areas and have plumbed for two superb hotels in Puerto De La Cruz, a
small town centrally placed at the foot of the Orotava Valley within
easy reach of the other three walking areas. It is on the North Coast by the
sea and although it is a small resort it has not lost its Spanishness, unlike
larger resorts in the South.
Choose from the 4 star Hotel Tigaiaga or Hotel
Valle Mar
Walking conditions on Tenerife are excellent most of the year. Winter
days are generally warm but a little cooler in The Teide National Park due to
it's height. Summer can be hot and humid but it is cooler in the North, where the best walking is, than
in the South due to the prevailing winds allowing walking throughout the year.
If a day in the summer is forecast to be hot, then plan to walk through the high
mountain pine forests where it will be cooler.
