The setting for this holiday is in the Gastein valley, a deeply cut valley in the midst of the imposing panoramas of the Hohe Tauern mountains.  This part of Austria sets hikers’ pulses racing in anticipation of exploring on foot the surrounding mountains. It is home to a wealth of natural treasures from clear healthy mountain air to quaint villages and an exclusive town nestled against a steep mountainside with a thunderous waterfall.  Located in the state of Salzburg, the Gasteinertal has been welcoming walkers for generations. There is a direct train link to Salzburg making travel to the area easy.

The valley has three villages two of which have our chosen hotels. Bad Hofgastein is the lower of the two towns and is a market town as well as a centre for walkers with a superb transport hub. It is a delightful old town full of historic buildings with pavement cafes to sip tea and watch the world go by after a good day's walk. Bad Gastein is the higher of the two located at 1000m and is an Austrian Spa town of worldwide repute.  Although it continues to be a popular spa town, it now equally caters for the needs of walkers with gondolas and buses taking you deep into the mountains. In both locations you will receive a Gastein Card which offers free town buses and reduced rates on valley buses. The card also means you can join the day and ½ day guided walks which operate in season free of charge.

There are a number of chair lifts and gondolas in the valley which  will swiftly have you gaining over 1000m to alpine meadows far from the valley below. All the walking is on well marked paths, either in the alpine meadows, by lakes, deep into the side valley or gently down to the main valley. There is a network of mountain huts where you can take lunch or a refreshing drink. There are a number of themed hiking paths in the valley for you to enjoy.

Guided Walking

A weekly full day  and two half day guided walks are offered locally and are free to New Experience clients with a Gastein Card.

Availability Information

We suggest walking in this region from the end of May to the middle of October.  The temperature has an average high in July and August of 23C with June and September cooler and April and October an average high of 14C.

The best time to go is late Spring with its profusion of flowers, before the summer peak temperatures.  Equally September and October are good with cooler weather,  lower rainfall and autumn colours.  July and August the area is at its busiest, but quieter than many other Austrian locations.

Please note our best to go information is generally referring to the walking which may fall in the early or late season in some places. This may mean that not all tourist facilities will be open at the time you visit.
