Schladming Trek

All the hotels are family run on this trek and vary in size from 5 rooms to 40. Most are 3 star with one 4 star and two small country hotels. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms, except at Michaelerberg with a private bathroom with toilet along the corridor from the room. Food will feature local specialities and is taken in the hotels. All hotels will give you a warm Styrian welcome.

Here is a brief description of our normal hotels, however if full, we may well change the hotel to something similar.

Night 1 This *** hotel is a lovely building in true rural Austrian style. It is set in a small rustic hamlet- within the larger district of Obere Leiten - with no nearby facilities. All rooms are attractive, spacious and well equipped, with shower and toilet. Each room has a television. There is a good spa, area with sauna and a quiet room. The hotel’s own restaurant serves good, typically Austrian, food and much of it originates from local farms

Night 2 Either: A family-run *** hotel in the centre of the quiet village of Assach above the valley floor the Ennstal. All 22 rooms have an en-suite bathroom and a satellite TV. Most of them are furnished in typical Alpine style and feature a balcony. The wellness area with a sauna and an infrared cabin and a rest area invites you to relax. In the cosy restaurant with tiled stove you can enjoy tasty Styrian specialities and home-made desserts. Free wifi.

Or: A small 5-room hotel close to the station in the centre of Aich. The rooms are all en-suite and are clean and comfortable. The main function of Grafenwirt is as a restaurant, and website reviews bear testament to the high quality of the varied food, cooked by the owner.  It is just 5 minutes’ walk to the public swimming lake.

Night 3 Occupying a very old and charming building in the very centre of Öblarn, this Gasthof ***, owned and run by the Schattleitner family offers a traditional homely and friendly welcome. The 9 rooms are comfortable and clean, all with en-suite facilities, and again local produce is the basis of the good regional food. There is a garden, and an outside terrace on which to enjoy a relaxing drink. Free wifi.

Night 4 The family Moser runs this 5-room hotel and restaurant at 1300m, high above the Ennstal near Gröbming. The fine building dates from 1932.It is in an isolated position at the end of the road, and is the starting point for a number of walks. It is also popular with local people as a place to go for a meal or a drink. There is a large terrace with great views. The rooms are clean and have a wash basin. Shower and WC, for your use only, are immediately adjacent.  The food is good and generous in quantity. There is an outdoor swimming pool, solar heated, open in high summer only.

Night 5 This hotel is in a quiet, isolated spot high above the Ennstal. Deer frequent the adjacent pastures. The very welcoming family are proud of their home, which has been in the family for generations - and it does feel more like a welcoming home than a hotel. The rooms are large and comfortable, and all with en-suite facilities and television. The excellent food is prepared by the owner and is based on their own produce. Weather permitting; the outside terrace with great views is ideal for relaxing with or without a drink, and a very pleasant spot to eat.

Night 6 As you would expect for a hotel boasting 4 stars, this is a fine establishment set in the centre of the scattered village of Untertal. The 40 excellent rooms are well-appointed and have en-suite shower and WC. There is a large spa offering various treatments, solarium and sauna, and a fine heated outdoor pool from which you can observe grazing deer in the adjacent meadows. The food offers a wide choice and is very good. The pleasant and helpful staff will be interested in your trek. Free wifi.

Night 7 The *** inn was formerly a farm building of the Benedictine monastery of St. Peter in Salzburg. It was first documented in 1123, parts of the current building are over 500 years old, and has been family owned for four generations. It is at the heart of the village close to the local shop. Of the 30 rooms most have a balcony and all have en suite facilities – some with a bath – and television. There is a small sauna and the nearby outdoor community swimming pool, solar heated, is owned by the hotel. The good food is based on healthy local produce. You will be assured of a friendly welcome, and the staff will be interested in your trek. Free wifi.
