Wildstrubel - Hotel to Hotel Trek - Hotel to Hotel Trek Self Guided walking holiday - Click here to find out more about Self Guided walking holidays

The Wildstrubel is one of Switzerlands‘ highest peaks rising to over 3,250m and circumnavigating this magnificent mountain is an ancient trail which has now become the renowned Wildstrubel Trek. The trek passes through more than one region of Switzerland offering a contrast between the German speaking Bernese Oberland and the predominately French speaking Valais. Scenery, landscapes and culture also contrast with the Bernese Oberland - very much‚ high mountain with alpine characteristics whilst the Valais is more gentle and warm with vineyards adorning the steep slopes as they fall away from the high peaks above. In crossing from one side to the other you traverse the Gemmi Pass - one of the highest, remotest and indeed, oldest mountain passes in all of Switzerland closest to some of largest remaining glaciers in the country.

THE WALKING

Paths are generally of good quality but some are steep with vertiginous sections. The route is mostly on Bergwegs, mountain paths which are single track. You cross over four mountain passes between 2000 and 3000m high and walk across alpine pastures as well as high mountain landscapes. There are a number of chair lifts and busses which can shorten your walking day in places, however your days‘ walk will always end in the comfort of a 3* hotel in an attractive Swiss village.

BAGGAGE TRANSFER

Your bags (1 bag per person) are transferred from hotel to hotel on all days with the exception of two leaving you free to carry the minimum for a day hike. For the overnight stays in Montana and Leukerbad you will need to carry spare clothes and washing kit as your luggage cannot be transported to these hotels over the high passes economically. However, if you are a group of 6 or more this may be arranged.

WALK GRADING

Self Guided - Challenging with some long days and steep ascents. Some may be avoided which would grade the trek as Moderate. The trek is very remote in places.

Day 1 Travel to the well known Swiss village of Kandersteg by train.

Day 2 Kandersteg local walk. Today you will have a choice of walks in the area to warm up for the week ahead! We provide a walk booklet with a choice of walks. For example, hike up to a mountain hut if you wish a challenge straight off, or take a gentler walk along the Kander or Gastner valleys.

Day 3 Kandersteg to Adelboden Today we suggest you start by using Allmeralp chairlift (you can walk the 550m ascent if you wish) and then walk towards Bundergrat. Climb to the top of nearby Bunderspitz (2456m) for spectacular 360 degree views before descending to the village of Adelboden. Overnight in Adelboden. Ascent 720m Descent 1000m Distance 7 ¾ miles Walking Time 5 ¾ hours

Day 4 Adelboden to Lenk It’s over another pass today, but somewhat lower at 1960m! With less rugged scenery, today is more alpine and offers fairly easy paths along the route of this scenic crossing from one valley to the other, but there is still no lack of snowy mountain peaks in view. The ascent can be reduced by taking the cable car to Berglager. Ascent 930 Descent 1320m Distance 9 miles Walking Time 6 hours

Day 5 Lenk to Montana Today is one of the two high pass crossings. You can shorten the days’ trek by taking the bus to Iffigenalp - a delightful journey which reduces the walk by 5 miles. You then ascend steeply 1000m to the Wildstrubel Hut for a well earned break and refreshment. Continuing to climb a little higher (2812m) you gain views over one of Switzerland’s largest glaciers the Glacier de la Plaine Morte. Here you have a choice of descending directly to your hotel or walking higher still descending by cable car to Montana (numbers if you take cable car in brackets) Ascent 1500m (1350m) Descent 1500m (nil) Distance 10 (5) miles Walking Time 6 (5) hours. Your bags will have been sent to Kandersteg today as it not possible to get them to Montana and Leukerbad, so tonight and tomorrow night you need overnight things.

Day 6 Montana to Leukerbad A lower level walk today across alpine meadows. You can enjoy stunning views down into the Rhône Valley and across the valley to the high peaks of the Valais. This walk can be shortened by taking a bus to Zironde. Ascent 300m Descent 700m Distance 10 ½ miles Walking Time 7 hours. No main baggage to day just overnight things.

Day 7 Leukerbad to Kandersteg Today you can have an easy stroll or a very challenging walk as you have the option of two cable cars to avoid ascents and descents. First there is an immediate climb to the Gemmi pass - a steep ascent of 1000m which can be avoided by using the cable car. Then there is a gentle descent to Sunnbuhl above Kandersteg, where you can either take the cable car or descend the remaining distance on foot.  Ascent 925m Descent 1175m Distance 11 ¾ miles Walking Time 6 hours. There is an option to stay an extra day in Kandersteg for leisure time or for more walking.

Day 8 Take the train back to Geneva or Zurich today, this is still part of the holiday as you sit back and enjoy the wonderful Swiss scenery through the window and start to think about your next mountain hike.............
